INDUSTRY: FMCG JOB TITLE: Research Scientist JOB LOCATION: Bangalore JOB DESCRIPTION: To provide leading edge expertise in the area of molecular and microbial ecology, to undertake risk assessments for innovations, in particular for the Home & Personal care and Water categories. The job holder will also contribute to the development of new science and tools in the area of functional genomics to improve our risk assessment capabilities. Scientific input to development of new methods for HPC/ water pathogen identification and characterization •Characterize microbial interactions in complex environments, environmental/skin populations, through the understanding of genomics, signalling, pathway perturbation etc.
•Develop understanding of mechanisms and factors that allow microbial populations to evade/resist antimicrobial materials or other microbial control strategies
•Apply current and generate new knowledge on the microbial communities existing in domestic and environmental situations
•Providing appropriate scientific input into the design of experimental studies to ensure the generation of relevant data for risk assessment.
•Participating in external interactions in science area via membership of national and international bodies, developing good working relationships/collaborations with external partners and key opinion formers, ensuring external influence to benefit.
Risk Assessment •Apply global risk management methodologies/ approaches to understand and estimate risk from innovations, with a focus on applying data and information from ‘omics’ technologies and ‘ecological’ approaches
•Holistic risk assessment – estimating impacts on beneficial or non-target microbial communities in addition to pathogenic targets, in terms of clinical or environmental outcomes,
Project leadership and people management •Contribute to, and lead relevant projects, involving external groups, that enable the delivery of world-class microbiological safety science.
•Ability to lead and deliver through people
Scientific & Technology Expertise in Safety Assessment •Ecology – ability to understand and control microbial interactions in complex environments
•Molecular – ability to identify genes important for resistance, pathogenicity, use genetic information to predict responses and understand complex populations.
•Clinical features – ability to understand susceptibility of host, immune status, predisposing conditions, adverse effects associated with exposure to microorganisms e.g. severity, acute and chronic effects Business Support •The ability to use and apply based risk assessment to support innovation process and supply chain Scientific Authority and Impact (internal and external) •Using our scientific credibility to impact the direction of projects and programmes, as well as decisions made in the external environment Safety Advice •The ability to communicate complex scientific information and safety rationales to individuals from other disciplines and to non technical individuals
